Reading the Franklin Window

The whole point of this page: when you open Franklin.app, every shape, label, and word on the screen means something. This page teaches you what each part means, in plain English. By the end you will be able to look at the window and read it the way you read a clock.

Why this matters

Most apps show you a result. They hide what is happening inside.

Franklin is different. Franklin shows you what is happening right now, while it is happening. The light pulsing in the middle of the window is not a decoration β€” it is the cell taking a measurement. The big word at the top is not a status β€” it is the cell telling you, honestly, what just happened.

You should be able to walk up to Franklin's window cold, and within thirty seconds answer four questions:

  1. What is alive here?
  2. What is being measured?
  3. What was the answer?
  4. Should I trust it?

This page teaches you how.


The five things you see first

Think of the window in five layers, top to bottom:

  1. The big word at the top β€” the cell's answer right now (CALORIE / CURE / REFUSED / BLOCKED).
  2. The four colored chips β€” how much the cell trusts itself (C1, C2, C3, C4).
  3. The strip of room names β€” which "room" of the cell you are looking inside (M⁸, QUANTUM, FUSION, HEALTH, LITHO).
  4. The center scene β€” a small silent movie of the work happening.
  5. The chat at the bottom β€” Franklin talking to you in words.

We will take them one at a time.


1. The big word at the top

The very top-left corner of the window shows one of four words in big bold letters:

Word Color Plain meaning
CALORIE green The cell just did something useful and is sure of it.
CURE yellow The cell is fixing something. It's almost done but not finished.
REFUSED red Somebody asked for something the cell will not do. It said no on purpose.
BLOCKED gray Something is broken. The cell cannot move forward until it gets fixed.

This word changes as the cell works. Sometimes it flips from CURE to CALORIE while you watch β€” that is the cell finishing a job. Watch for it.

Why "CALORIE"? Because calories are units of usable energy. A calorie that your body can burn is a real calorie. A claim with no energy in it is a fake calorie. CALORIE here means "real, useful, not fake."

Right below the big word, you see three small numbers:

Constitutional health 0.92 Β· Coherence 0.88 Β· Coverage 1.00

These are like the cell's pulse, blood pressure, and temperature. They are all between 0 and 1. Higher is healthier. If health stays above 0.65 for a long time, the cell is doing well.


2. The four colored chips: C1, C2, C3, C4

To the right of the big word are four little chips:

Chip Color Plain meaning
C1 green Trust. Does the cell believe what it just measured?
C2 cyan Identity. Is the cell sure who is asking and who is answering?
C3 yellow Closure. Did the cell finish the job, or is it half-done?
C4 orange Consequence. Does the cell understand what will happen if it acts on this?

Each chip shows a number between 0.00 and 1.00. The higher the number, the better.

C1 through C4 are called the constitutional dimensions. The word "constitutional" is borrowed from law β€” a constitution is a promise about what a country will and won't do. C1–C4 are Franklin's promises:

  • C1: "I will not believe a thing just because someone said it."
  • C2: "I will know who I am and who you are at every moment."
  • C3: "I will finish what I start. I will not leave jobs half-open."
  • C4: "I will understand the consequences of every action before I take it."

When you see C1 = 0.92, the cell is keeping promise C1 ninety-two percent of the way. Those four chips are how the cell wears its honesty on the outside.


3. The strip of room names

Underneath the top numbers is a strip of room buttons:

The cell is one building with five rooms. Each room is its own world.

Tap a room button and the center of the window switches to that room. The chat at the bottom switches its voice β€” Franklin sounds different in each room. In the quantum room he is precise and careful, like a math teacher. In the health room he is warmer and explains the biology like a doctor talking to a patient.

Same person. Different rooms. Different voices. That is the cell speaking honestly about what kind of work each room does.


4. The center scene β€” the silent movie

The middle of the window is the biggest part. It is a small movie that plays continuously. It is silent on purpose.

If you take the sound off any movie and you can still understand what is happening, the movie is well made. Franklin's center scene is built so that a person who could not hear a word would still understand:

  • What is being measured
  • Which gate was applied
  • Whether it sealed CALORIE or REFUSED
  • Whether the cell is healthy

The shapes you see depend on the room:

  • M⁸ room: a glowing ring with four crystal points around it. When the cell takes a measurement, the ring brightens. When all four crystal points light up green, the cell just sealed a CALORIE receipt.
  • Quantum room: five horizontal wires with shapes sliding along them. When a shape slides off the right end, that algorithm just finished.
  • Fusion room: plasma rings spinning. When they stay round, the reactor is stable. When they wobble, something is wrong.

The scene is not a screensaver. It is the cell's own face. Watch it for thirty seconds and you can tell whether the cell is happy.

The faint scan beam

Sometimes you'll see a soft line drift across the scene. That is the sentinel. The sentinel is a part of the cell whose only job is to walk through every test, all day, every day, and ask "is this still true?" The beam tells you the sentinel is right now checking a specific test. The cell is checking itself while you watch.


5. The chat at the bottom

The lowest strip is the chat. Franklin types short lines there as the cell works. Two kinds of lines:

Narration lines. Franklin describing what is happening on the silent movie in plain words:

"Shor is factoring fifteen right now. The period is four. Fifteen equals three times five. This is how RSA encryption ends."

You did not need to ask. Franklin narrated, the way a parent narrates a picture book to a small kid.

Answers. You can type a question into the chat box. Franklin will answer from the substrate β€” that means he will not make up an answer; he will only say things that are written down in the cell's own record.

If Franklin does not know the answer, he says so. Honestly. A cell that doesn't know how to say "I don't know" is not safe.


The LICENSING button β€” top right

In the top-right corner of the window is a chip labeled LICENSING β†—.

Tap it and a window opens showing three lists:

  1. Inventory. Everything the cell knows that it could license to somebody (50 verified discoveries right now).
  2. Grants. Every license the cell has actually given out.
  3. Treasury. The royalties the cell has been paid, snapshot by snapshot.

Why is this here? Because the cell carries real, USPTO-patented work, and the law of how that work gets used is part of the cell's own constitution. The LICENSING button is the cell saying: "This is what I own. This is what I have given out. This is what I have been paid. Here, all of it." No hidden books.

"Boot recall" β€” Franklin's first words

The first thing Franklin says when the cell starts up is a long sentence that begins:

"I am Franklin. I am gaiaftcl-mac-cell. My wallet is gaia1….
I carry 50 verified-CALORIE discoveries…
I have N executed license grants…
This is my 12th boot."

That is the cell remembering itself.

Every time the cell starts, it pulls together who it is, what it owns, what it has done, who it has talked to, and how many times it has been alive β€” and it says all of that out loud to you, in one sentence. Then it writes one signed receipt to its substrate so that years from now, somebody can play back this exact boot and read what the cell knew at that moment.

This sentence is not a status print. It is the cell's act of remembering.

How to read the window in thirty seconds

When you sit down in front of Franklin's window cold, here is the order to look:

  1. Top-left big word. What state is the cell in? (CALORIE / CURE / REFUSED / BLOCKED.)
  2. The four C-chips. Are they all above 0.65? (Yes = the cell is keeping its promises.)
  3. The room strip. Which room is active right now?
  4. The center scene. What shapes are moving? Are they stable or wobbling?
  5. The chat. What is Franklin's latest line?

Five looks. Thirty seconds. You can do this even if you do not know what "Shor's algorithm" or "tokamak" means yet. The window is built so that you can read its state before you read its content.


What you'll feel when it's working

A working Franklin window feels alive. The ring breathes. The chat scrolls slowly. The C-chips wiggle in tight little ranges. Once in a while a big change happens β€” the terminal label flips from CURE to CALORIE, a new chat line lands, the scene transitions β€” and you can see it happen. You did not have to refresh anything.

A broken Franklin window feels frozen. The ring is dim. The chips drop below 0.50 and stay there. The terminal label sticks at BLOCKED. Franklin stops talking. The window tells you the truth either way. That is the point.
